Digestive diseases affect an estimated 60 million Americans. These diseases and their associated long-term complications have catastrophic social and economic consequences. They are responsible for approximately 13 percent of all admissions to hospitals in the United States and about 200,000 deaths each year. Digestive diseases cost the nation more than $60 billion annually, of which $45 billion are direct medical costs such as hospitalizations and medications.
